Expansion of Indore-Ujjain road to six lanes begins with eyes on Simhastha 2028

Indore: With eyes on Simhastha 2028, the long-awaited expansion of the Indore-Ujjain road from four to six lanes is set to commence next week. According to MPRDC officials, the construction for the road widening will begin near the Ninora toll plaza in Ujjain and will progress towards Indore. Depending on the progress and convenience, work will simultaneously be carried out on both the Indore and Ujjain sides. To minimise disruptions to traffic, construction will be done in smaller sections in a phase-wise manner.

The Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation Limited (MPRDC) is undertaking this road widening project at a cost of Rs 1,692 crore of which Rs 623 crore will be spent on the road widening and construction work. The 46-kilometre stretch from Aurbindo Hospital in Indore to Harifatak in Ujjain will be widened to six lanes. No additional land acquisition is required for this expansion. Approximately 60% of the road falls within Indore district, while the remaining 40% is in Ujjain district. The completed road will be 45 metre wide, with a 22.5-metre-wide paved surface on either side of the divider. Additionally, there will be a one-metre-wide earthen shoulder on each side.

MPRDC officials have stated that they are actively removing encroachments in rural areas to facilitate the construction. Approximately 50% of the encroachments have already been cleared. Sufficient land is available for the project, eliminating the need for further acquisition. Encroachments in urban areas near Indore will be removed as construction progresses.

The construction agency is scheduled to begin work on January 20. A detailed construction plan has been prepared to ensure smooth execution. The entire 46-kilometre stretch is expected to be completed by December 2026.

Collector Asheesh Singh has emphasised on the importance of completing the six-lane road project before the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. "We have also directed officials to prioritise widening the road near the toll plaza in Indore to improve traffic flow," he said.
