IIT-Indoreans to rub shoulders with Infosys

As IT biggie Infosys plans to open its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Indore soon, it is now looking at the possibility of working out a hybrid model with Indian Institute of Technology Indore under which its employees can pursue master's and doctrate level degrees at the institute. Principal researcher (Education and Research) Infosys Bangalore P Suresh said this while talking to HT during Industry Academia Conclave 2013 at IIT Indore's PACL campus on Saturday. Delegates from many companies like Microsoft, INTEL and IBM participated in the event. Explaining the hybrid model Suresh said, "Many of our employees want to study further and we want to provide them with this opportunity to study at one of the best institutes while working with one of the best companies."

The company is working on a model whereby the employees can study at IIT and work at Infosys simultaneously. He added that Infosys already has a similar tie-up with prominent institutes in other cities.

"Since we are going to have our set up here soon, strategically we are looking at new and better relations with IIT Indore. We might come up with research grants and provide assistance to their students," added P Suresh. As the company's SEZ would be set up soon, it might hire the institute's students as interns, Suresh said. Infosys currently has two models one in which the company funds academic projects and another model in which the company gives its problems to students to work on them and find solutions.

"Currently, our intership model and IIT Indore's are conflicting as they send their students only for a period of two-and-a-half months and we are looking for at least one semester from them. We hope that something can be worked out," he said.

However, during a presentation, faculty member from IIT Abhishek Shrivastava said, "We are looking at the format of extended internship where students can work during their summer vacations as well, so that they get enough time to understand the dynamics of the companies they are working for."
